THIS MONTH IN MUSIC HISTORY

Here are a few useless but hopefully interesting and entertaining facts about music related items that happened in February:

2015 – On February 20, 2015, Singer Ariana Grande launches her first fragrance.  Two years later her line grossed over 150 million dollars in sales worldwide.  That does not include any money she made singing. At that time she was 22 years old.

1949 – February 1st, 1949, RCA Victor records introduced the first 45 rmp record, a demonstration disk featuring music and narration.  The introduction of this single-song-per-side format made records affordable and available to the masses. It helped create record companies that became very powerful industries that continue to evolve today.

1959 – Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly all die in a plane crash, February 3, 1959.  This becomes known as the “day the music died” after Don McLane releases his 1972 hit American Pie.  Miss American Pie was the name of the airplane they crashed.

1964 – On February 7th, 1964, the Beatles landed in American.  If you were alive at the time, you know music had never experienced anything quite like this before, and will probably never experience anything like it again.  It was the beginning of the “British Invasion” and music in general, and rock and roll specifically, would never be the same. Rock and Roll was fueling the youth of the free world.  

1972 – February 11th, 1972, David Bowie debuts alter-ego Ziggy Stardust at a concert in Tolworth, England stoaking the fires of Glam Rock to new highs.

1988 – Pink Floyd’s album Dark Side of the Moon finishes an incredible 741 weeks on the BillBoard charts.  A run that lasted from 1973 to 1988. Later when BillBoard changed the way they counted sales, Dark Side of the Moon lived on the chart for another 900 weeks.  Many consider this to be the greatest album of all time.
